ESO 4: SECOND CONDITIONAL

Remember the second conditional is used to talk about ‘unreal’ or impossible things. It’s not important which clause comes first. Example:

If I had more time, I would go to the gym. (but I have no time)

If you did more exercise, you would feel better. (but I don't do more exercise)

I would call Mary if I had her phone number. (but I don't have it)

Remember you need to use a comma when you start the sentence with the if-clause.

If you use the verb to be in the past simple, we use 'were' not 'was' no matter which subject you have.

If I were you, I would try harder.

ESO3 -ED or -ING?

Are you confused? Is this confusing? If you never know which one to use, have a look at the grammar rules and then do the exercises.

Many adjectives in English can end in -ED or -ING.
An adjective that ends in -ING is used to describe: the characteristic of a person or a thing.
An adjective that ends in -ED is used to describe: a feeling.

Compare the difference:
  • My girlfriend is bored. - (My girlfriend feels bored)
  • My girlfriend is boring. - (My girlfriend is a boring person)
You can use these adjectives to describe people or situations.

Of course, you could also find both adjectives in the same sentence.
Examples:
  • I was shocked by how shocking the accident was last night.
  • They were frightened by the frightening roller-coaster ride!
  • I am annoyed by how annoying that person in front of us is.
  • Sally was confused by the confusing street signs in the city.
Now try with these exercises. If you feel you need more practice, tell me.

ESO 4: SECOND CONDITIONAL

At the end of next this week you have the next test (UNIT 12). Here you will find some exercises to practice the second conditional.

Remember:

If + Past Simple, would + infinitive

OR

Would + infinitive if + past simple (here the comma disappears)

If the verb you have to use in the Past Simple is the verb 'to be', remember to use 'were' for all the subjects:

If I were you ...
If he were here ...

As simple as this. If you need some more examples, click on this link. At the bottom of this page you will find a link to some exercises (Continue with the exercises).
